There are a lot of light sources onboard a passenger vessel. The lighting onboard a vessel have traditionally been consisting of fluorescent tubes and halogen spotlights. Ordinarily the lighting onboard a passenger vessel are lit either for the most part of or the whole day. Both the fluorescent tubes and the halogen spotlights uses quite a lot of energy compared with the more energy efficient LED-lights. The power onboard a vessel is usually produced using diesel generators. A diesel generator uses more fuel when producing more electricity. The cost for electricity onboard varies with varying fuel prices. With more expensive electricity the easier it will be to save money on an upgrade. Using less fuel onboard will not only save money but will also be good for the environment. The study have used a method of semi structured interviews with a number of employees from three companies with passenger vessels operating in Swedish waters. The study has looked into what different aspects are prioritized when upgrading lighting onboard a passenger vessel. Furthermore the study have investigated which payback time the companies think are acceptable when planning an upgrade. The study have shown that the most important aspect when upgrading is the economical result. Aspects such as safety and regulations are also important but does not impose any problems when upgrading. The companies sees the environmental gains as a bonus but will not prioritize this aspect. The overall feeling from the companies about LED-lighting are positive.
