Abstract

This thesis was conducted at Svenska Mässan Gothia Towers AB (SMGT) and focuses on identifying metrics and improving the company's waste management system. Through an extensive literature review, empirical measurements, interviews, and analysis of existing data, the project identified key challenges and opportunities within SMGT's current waste management. The results indicate SMGT's need to introduce new waste fractions to comply with stricter regulations from the Waste Ordinance (2020:614). The work has resulted in several proposed changes to the physical layout of the recycling station, including the introduction of new waste fractions and more precise sorting. Furthermore, the literature studies identified specific performance indicators such as recycling and reuse rates, waste generation, CO2e emissions, and cost per kg of waste, which can help track efficiency and justify the changes that should be implemented. By implementing these recommended improvements, SMGT can not only reduce its environmental impact and costs but also improve its compliance with current environmental legislation. This report contributes to a broader understanding of sustainable waste management within the hotel and conference sector and emphasizes the importance of careful sorting to meet both environmental and economic goals.
