Lubricating oil is vital for many machines and is needed to reduce friction, seal between moving parts, cooling and protecting machine parts against corrosion e.g. Furthermore, it keeps the machine clean by washing away abrasive particles, water and general debris to oil cleaning units, if any. For the lubricating oil to fulfil its functions the proportion of impurities, such as water and particles must be kept as low as possible. This can either be done through regular oil changes or by cleaning the oil through a cleaning unit. A project was launched designed to compare three lube oil cleaning units. The cleaning units to be studied had similar flow capacities and field of application. The purpose of this study was to investigate the selected cleaning units and their separation capability for particles and water. The units were subjected to a number of tests which resulted in some conclusions. The results showed that cleaning unit 2 quickly separated out the larger particles but had a limited cleaning ability in regard of smaller particles. Cleaning unit 3 has higher average and more stable purification efficiency and is affected, but not in the same extent as cleaning unit 2, when particle size decreases. Cleaning unit 1 has the highest average cleaning efficiency and does not, to any significant extent, seem to be affected by decreasing particle sizes. In regard of water separation, cleaning unit 2 has a much higher efficiency than the rest of the cleaning units.
