In this report we will look at how officers working at sea relate to ECDIS alarm management on tankers both in competence and in attitude. The reason to this is reports about an increased workload and stress on board vessels because of the alarm management advancement. In 2010, the Manila convention took place and as a result new regulations came into force about increased knowledge and education in ECDIS management and that all commercial vessels will have ECDIS after July 2018. To investigate how knowledge or attitude towards ECDIS reflects on the alarm management, a survey was done. Officers working on tankers that visited Port of Gothenburg in November 2015 have answered on 17 questions about ECDIS, its functions and setting regarding alarms. The compiled result of 24 surveys shows that the regulations about certificates and ECDIS is lived up to. However, the answers show that the alarm management is not yet optimised. This can depend on two factors, partly the attitude of the user against the alarms and partly by the ergonomics, how user-friendly ECDIS is.
