Sammanfattning

Diesel injectors complies an essential function in a diesel engine and are therefore important components (He et al. 2013, s. 132, 136-137). The inside geometry of a diesel injector has a large effect on how well they performs. When diesel injectors are subject to wear, the geometry as well as the properties changes (Golev, Mokhov och Rusakov 1989, s. 1-7). Other researches have shown a connection between the content in the exhaust gases and the operating hours of the injector (Duran, Uriondo och Moreno-Gutiérrez 2012, s. 58). With the already known effects from wear of the diesel injector in mind, the parameters were studied to detect if they were able to indicate the condition of the injector during operation. A two-cylinder marine diesel engine made by Volvo Penta in 1960s was used in the study. The power output and the content in in the exhaust gases were measured to determine the condition of the injectors. Special attention was paid to the formation of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. In order to try to wear the diesel injectors the engine was operated in accordance to a specially designed schedule. Tries were then carried out to recondition the injectors. First only by cleaning and later on the injectors were sent to a specialist firm. Tests to determine that the repeatability was sufficient were also carried out. The results were difficult to interpret. The engine´s power output were shown to be a not so good indicator to determine the condition of the injectors. A more clear connection between the formation of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides and the condition of the injectors was observed.
