Sammanfattning
Quality management systems such as the ISO9001:2015 is a framework that is used in
many sectors, not just the construction industry. However, a formal quality management
system does not imply that it is used as intended or that it is tailored towards actual
practices. This thesis aims to examine how quality management and inspection
practices are applied in construction projects and how they align with a company’s
formal quality management system. The study is particularly relevant for both academic
research within construction management, but also for practitioners seeking to improve
quality management processes in project-based organizations.
A qualitative case study approach was adopted, focusing on a Swedish construction
company, Tornstaden, and three of their projects. Data was collected through a
literature review, document study, dyadic and single respondent interviews, site
observations, and respondent validation workshops. The analysis was conducted using
thematic analysis in an iterative process. The theoretical framework is based on quality
management systems, inspection practices, and organizational learning within project
based organizations.
Based on the findings, a set of improvement proposals was developed and refined
through validation workshops. The proposed improvements focus on improving
structure, continuity, and accountability, particularly through updates to key
documents, improved handover, and increased digitalization.
The study contributes by providing a practical framework for aligning formal systems
with everyday project practices, highlighting the importance of adapting quality
management systems to the realities of project-based organizations.
