Abstract

This project has been carried out at Ljusgårda AB, a company located in Tibro, Sweden. Ljusgårda is an industry-leading company that specializes in hydroponic farming indoors. Ljusgårda has entered into a partnership and will assist with the help and knowledge required to enable the implementation of a 500 square meter indoor vertical farming facility in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This bachelor thesis aims to collect data that enables the development of a layout plan which can be used for a factory with vertical indoor farming. The information in this thesis has been based on data collection from an existing factory at Ljusgårda AB in Tibro, simplified systematic layout planning and other project management methodologies. Much focus has been on analyzing data from the existing indoor farming in Tibro and then developing it with further improvements on the layout, so that the requirements are met for a factory which can be built in Riyadh. A successful result was possible with the help of a number of different methodologies and a lot of data collection based on interviews and research. In summary, the thesis project has resulted in a developed factory layout which has been optimized to meet the requirements set by stakeholders. While at the same time, meeting the process requirements in a favorable manner. The conclusion that has been drawn is that the result is successful and can be used during the development of a new factory. The layout has been streamlined, instead of using 1800 square meters for 44 zipgrow wagons, it is possible to only use 500 square meters for 28 zipgrow wagons. It is worth mentioning that the layout plan is only a small part of a well-functioning flow. With further work it should be investigated how different aspects concerning logistics should be handled in the most optimal way. As a future recommendation, the project group believes that each process should have its own closed space, in order to reduce the risk of contamination. Furthermore, it is considered that a standardized work that applies different parts of "Lean Production" would be advantageous to use.
