In today’s connected world, we have grown accustomed to the possibility to determine our own location on the globe by utilizing the GPS-system through various portable electronic devices such as cellphones, laptops, and tablets. Indoor positioning, however, is an area where GPS falls short, which is why already commercially established technologies like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are normally used instead. While there is widespread access to these technologies, their ability to pinpoint an exact location of a given unit is limited. Because the technique used is based on measuring signal strength, they merely indicate of which room the device currently occupies, rather than give an actual distance to a point of reference. This report will center around a less well-known and not yet widespread tehchnology: Ultra Wideband. The precision of distance measuring when using the technique Symmetric double-sided two-way ranging with two Ultra Wideband transceivers will be tested and evaluated. This technique will then be applied in a trilateration scheme for indoor positioning purposes.
