Sammanfattning
This bachelor’s thesis builds upon previous projects at Chalmers University of Technology
with the goal of developing a tool to make occupancy statistics for room
utilization in higher education environments accessible. The foundation was the
existing system Find A Room, which measures room occupancy using sensors, but
currently lacks a statistical tool for further analysis and optimization of space usage.
The objective of the project has been to investigate how such a statistical tool can
be designed for different target groups, as well as to highlight ethical and securityrelated
aspects in the handling of occupancy data.
A user analysis was conducted through a qualitative study in the form of interviews
in conjunction with a review of results from previous projects’ needs assessments.
User requirements were prioritized using methods such as MoSCoW and Analytic
Hierarchy Process. This formed the basis for generating a concept and the selection
of an API-based solution.
The work resulted in a requirements specification, system architecture, and a functioning
prototype in the form of a REST API. The prototype integrates occupancy
data and lecture bookings. It visualizes the relationship between registered and actually
attending students as well as the historical attendance per course occurence.
The conclusion is that a modular API-based system provides a solid foundation for
further development and integration into existing platforms. The work also identifies
important ethical considerations such as anonymity, access control, and data security,
and proposes guidelines for how these could be managed in future development
