Abstract

This case study examines the attitudes and opinions concerning separation equipment on ships. A separator purifies oil by means of centrifugal forces and is part of an essential system in an engine room. Data was collected through interviews and the main question was "How does the engine room staff view the user-friendliness of separators?”. The study focuses primarily on Alfa Laval's separators but a general picture of the separator as engine room component has been sought. The result shows that the engine staff perceive the user friendliness of a separators as good with room for improvement. Knowledge of the separators are varied and seem to correspond with engine room hierarchy. The study shows that more knowledge about the equipment is required to improve operation reliability.
