The purpose of this study was to examine the psychosocial working environment in the merchant fleet and if it’s influenced by cultural background. A survey form attending to different subjects of the psychosocial working environment was distributed to active sailors with Swedish and Filipino origin. The results from Swedish and Filipino sailors were compared and analyzed using models from previous stress and cross-cultural research. It became evident that there was an overall similarity in how the psychosocial working environment was perceived by crew members with different cultural backgrounds. However, minor deviations could be distinguished in a few areas of the psychosocial working environment such as perceived commitment to the workplace and quality of leadership.
