Internet of Things is growing and deploying an IoT unit today requires knowledge in programming of the microcontroller. The purpose of this project was to develop a universal IoT unit with focus on the end user interaction. An IoT unit requires communication between the user interface and the hardware (a microcontroller and a system on a chip) while the microcontroller operates autonomously. Relevant research was used to specify the requirements for the unit. The requirements were met through an agile development method broken down into three main cycles: development of the database, graphical user interface and development of the microcontroller code. The end result was a working prototype based on Arduino Yún with a grapical user interface to detach the user from the microcontroller. There are still areas that need further research and testing, where the main areas would be to test a headless database process and further development of the graphical user interface.
