Compressed air systems on board ships are of vital character to a ship to operate, but leakages in the pneumatic system are common. A survey was conducted to investigate the awareness of leaks in compressed air systems on board ships. In addition, a case study to see which methods of investigation to find leaks in compressed air systems are most suitable on board ship, with an environment which can vary in both temperature and high noise. The results of the survey that was conducted shows that almost no one uses ultrasound monitor or infrared thermal imaging for leak detection, it is also 70% of the responders that do not have a routine to actively search for leaks in the compressed air system on board. However, it is more usual to use their ears when it comes to finding leakage. Reference tests that was carried out on board shows that it is far easier to find leaks with a ultrasound-monitor, and it is much faster but when the machines is in operation, is not possibly to use ultrasound or the own ear. The case study was conducted on a limited part of the compressed air systems on board. Assuming that the leaks that were found on board during the case study had a diameter of 0.5mm it had potentially been able to save energy consumption closer to 28MWh per year.
