Abstract
The master thesis researches how architecture relates to its production and extraction of natural resources to produce building materials, and explores how this could be done through a holistic and regenerative approach across different scales. In doing so, the thesis explores the theory of regenerative design, highlighting the need for eco-efficiency rather than eco-effectiveness where the circular idea of products as waste is eliminated, and instead seen as food for a renewable cycle. The research covers three filtering species such as blue mussels, eelgrass, and reeds and results in a mapping of their life cycle, biological function, occurrence, physical properties as well as their potential to perform as a building materials. The detail model shows in scale 1:5 three different applications of bio-based marine resources where the purpose is to highlight the possibilities of utilizing bio-based materials while showcasing what it means in terms of architectural expression and construction. The building stands on a foundation utilizing waste shells that is held together by a frame of granite stone. The walls and roof are insulated with eelgrass and the facade is cladded with a plastered reed mat. The model unfortunately lacks its traditionally inspired thatched reed roof.
