| dc.description.abstract | The construction industry continues to face significant challenges related to fragmented information management, inefficient communication and limited coordination between project stakeholders. Although digitalization has increased in. recent years, the adoption of Common Data Environments (CDEs) remains inconsistent, particularly among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Many construction projects still operate through disconnected systems and informal communication practices, contributing to delays, rework and information loss. This study investigates how the adoption of a CDE influences information flow, coordination and project practices within construction teams, while also examining the main needs and expectations of SMEs regarding more accessible CDE implementation. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach that combined a systematic literature review with semi-structured interviews with contractors operating in Spain and Mexico. The theoretical framework focused on digitalization, project information management, fragmentation and CDE implementation in construction projects. Interview data were analyzed through thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns related to communication, coordination and digital system adoption. The findings indicate that information fragmentation continues to affect project performance across companies of different sizes. While contractors using CDEs reported improvements in document control, traceability and information accessibility, many organizations still depend on hybrid systems that combine digital platforms with traditional communication methods. The study also identified barriers limiting wider adoption, including implementation costs, resistance to change, lack of standardization and difficulties adapting digital systems to practical site workflows, particularly within SMEs. The research contributes by providing empirical insights into current industry practices and highlighting the need for more flexible and accessible information management systems. Future research should further investigate the economic impact and long-term implementation of CDE solutions within SMEs. | |
