Abstract

During the financial crisis in 2008 the shipping industry was heavily affected by the following recession. Many shipping companies had to take action to reduce their expenses. As a result of this, vessels began slow-steaming to reduce their fuel consumption. This resulted in the developement of new engine models from the manufacturers to better cope with the new operating conditions. The design of the new engine models resulted in that many engines were affected by cold corrosion. The manufacturers of marine engines and other key players worked hard identifying and solving the problem and have done so with good result even though parts of the problem still remain. To consider the cold corrosion problem completely solved, more knowledge about the underlying chemical processes is needed. This report explores contributing factors to the origin of the problem as well as what actions can be taken to minimize or completely eliminate cold corrosion in large marine two-stroke engines. The purpose of the report is to examine whether the cold corrosion problem is solved and, if so, which method is preferred by the engine manufacturers. Furthermore, the possible side effects of the solutions are investigated. The result presented in the report is primarily based on interviews with personnel at MAN Diesel & Turbo, Wärtsilä, Winterhur Gas & Diesel, Univar, Maersk Oil Trading Lubricants and Federal-Mogul. By completing the information from the interviews with scientific litterature and technical reports, an overview of the issues regarding cold corrosion is provided. The interviews show that cold corrosion no longer is the major problem it once was thanks to good solutions. However, research in the area is still in progress as there is room for improvement.
