Abstract

This thesiswork was mainly about finding a way to calculate the melting time of aluminum in an oven. Statistics that consisted of measurement data and interviews were collected to describe the problem. From the statistics was created a crib intended for operators. It describes the type of scrap aluminum and the order in which the scrap have to be pushed into the oven. Theoretical calculations were made to determine melting time, losses and the influence of geometry. Simulations in MATLAB and COMSOL multiphysics were performed to check the results of the calculations. Conclusions from the calculations and simulations were verified against reality in production. The calculations were also used to create a timer so that the operators should know when to add aluminum to the oven. It turned out that if aluminum is added at the right time in the oven, the melting process is made more efficient.
