Sammanfattning

The aim of this work is to research exercise habits among watchkeeping seafarers on board Swedish, Norwegian and Danish vessel with watchkepping rotation at 4/8 and 6/6. Further to see what causes them to train on board and if there is any simple motivator factor that can be used to increase the exercise frequency among them. What we find is interesting because the working tasks often are monotonous and rarely involve any major physical loads which can lead to stress, obesity and welfare diseases that come with obesity. There is a healthy trend sweeping thru our society onshore where people incite each other and people are becoming more health conscious and seafarers are no exception from this. Even so, a majority of the crew choosing to not work out and we wonder why and are they any simple motivation factors increase the exercise onboard? An quantitative method were chosen to investigate our question through a questionnaire which were put out on the internet and then evaluated what the group responded and identify how the situation is on board vessels. The single biggest reason that causes people to train both ashore and at sea is health, which is a broad expression that encompasses many aspects. Furthermore, 4/8 watch exercise habits seen to be the same as for those who work 6 /6. A major problem is in the way of being able to exercise during bad weather, something that is difficult to influence by the individual.
