Abstract
Sandvik Coromant is a world-leading manufacturer of carbide cutting tools for use in machining applications
in metallic materials, such as turning, milling and drilling.
Edge reinforcement (abbr. ER) is a step in the manufacturing process for cutting tools. The edge reinforcement
process gives the cutting tools improved properties by machining the cutting edge to achieve
desired, uniform cutting edge geometry. The purpose of the degree project is to investigate whether the
edge rounding can be executed in terms suited for a real-world manufacturing environment, by brushing
the cutting edge with an interpolated movement to be able to control the process with greater freedom.
The impact goal of the degree project was to make advances toward a manufacturing process, suited for
a manufacturing environment, for edge rounding on cutting edges curved in multiple planes, in order
to develop competitive cutting tools. These tools can be used by customers to manufacture competitive
products with improved productivity and reduced enviromental impact, since edge rounding prolongs tool
life. A design of experiments approach was utilized to evaluate measurable effects of process parameters in
a structured way. The project has identified a number of key parameters that can be used to optimize the
process. Futhermore, a number of key areas are discussed where additional exploration could accelerate
the pursuit for a high quality and reliable production process for edge rounding on curved cutting edges.
