dc.description.abstractVolvo Penta is a global provider of marine and industrial propulsion- as well as power generation systems. Among its products are high-speed diesel engines designed for small to medium-sized commercial and recreational vessels. These engine platforms are constantly being further developed and are currently undergoing a Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) development project in response to increasing demands for environmental sustainability and acoustic comfort in marine applications. This bachelor’s thesis is a small part of the NVH project and aims to improve overall acoustic comfort through an enhanced exhaust system. A wide range of conceptual solutions were generated and systematically assessed in terms of technical possibility, performance potential, and applicability within given constraints. Through an iterative design process combining research, analysis, practical experiences onboard, and evaluation, two concepts were identified as candidates for further development. The development phase involved the creation of detailed CAD models, alongside functional analyses to ensure the concepts met all requirements and constraints. Both solutions use a secondary exhaust outlet and modified dimensions on the existing pipes to reduce unwanted noise and vibration. At the conclusion of the project, the developed concepts, together with supporting analysis and recommendations, were presented to Volvo Penta for further refinement and physical testing. The proposed concepts will hopefully give Volvo Penta a competitive edge in acoustic comfort on the inboard marine engine market.
