T This thesis work purpose has been to construct an arm designed to efficiently extract steel wire from a reactor designed by Scandinavian Enviro Systems. A study about how in a more simplified way steel wire could be extracted from the reactor by using air flow was conducted. The study was supposed to bring answers to the following questions; if a simplification of the extraction arm is possible? Which kind of cylinders would be best suited for the extraction arm? If it would be possible to make an original redesign to perform more efficiently. The method used during this project was the method for product development by Otto, K and Wood, K, Reverse engineering. The method was followed largely throughout the project, with the exception of a few steps that needed additional analyses. In order to perform the method, a reference product must be chosen whose purpose is to be used as a reference for evaluations and comparisons. According to the method, after enough information collection, it must be decided whether the redesign should be parametric, adaptive or original. In this project, it was decided to make the redesign adaptive. A parametric redesign was not relevant as several subsystems from the reference product could be excluded and an original redesign was not necessary as there was no major conflict between the reference product functions and the customer needs. Because the redesign was made adaptive, the product developed in the project is quite similar to the reference construction. Many of the subsystems in the reference construction are reused when designing the new product, which is good from several aspects. By using proven technology when redesigning, the required resources can be reduced. Another benefit of using proven technology is that one can say with greater certainty that the subsystems will function in the correct way without the need of doing thorough testing. The project has been limited by the fact that there has been no physical reference product to test and disassemble or the possibility to do physical tests on subsystems or developed concepts. This led to the fact that the subsystems weren’t being designed in detail. For example, the design did not include such parts as seals, brackets or full design of the integration with connecting systems.
