Sammanfattning

Sulphur emissions from ships fell dramatically January 1, 2015 in the northern Europe's waters because of the emission rules in the Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA) became harder. This report describes the advantages and disadvantages of different technologies that can meet these increased demands in a literature search. The report also includes three shipping companies' approach to the new requirements and how they have met them. The method used to determine the shipping companies’ approach was interviews with key people in Donsötank, TransAtlantic and Finnlines. The goal with this report has been to investigate the underlying factors to the crucial decisions to meet the oncoming of the new requirements in the SECA. Shipping companies interviewed in this report have used two different solutions, which have been ULSFO or scrubbers. Factors that influenced these decisions have proven to be what type of vessel and the current price of oil, where oil prices have been a key factor to a limited extent.
