This thesis study deals with waste heat recovery on board the ship Stena Scandinavica. A major cost for shipping companies is fuel oil consumption and methods of reduction can be proven profitable. To improve the overall efficiency is a cost-effective move against the high fuel prices stemming from a floating oil market. A well-known WHR technology is the steam turbine and further variations on the Rankine cycle are proposed commercially to this date. The introduction of the sulfur directive (SECA) excluded the usage of the cheap heavy fuel oils for many shipping companies meanwhile many ships are optimized for HFO operation. In the thesis the Stirling engine is presented and the case study investigates the conditions for waste heat recovery from exhaust gases. The internal combustion engine’s exhaust flow occupies a large part of the heat losses for all internal combustion engines, and not least the powerful diesel engines that propel ships worldwide. Can the Stirling engine recover energy lost in the exhaust gases? As method this case study compares literature and scientific articles related to the topic and semi-structured interviews are held with knowledgeable commercial representatives. The study demonstrates that a range of theoretically applicable Stirling engines can reduce heat loss and thus reduce fuel expenditure. The Stirling engine's suitability is treated from an economic and practical perspective.
