The automotive industry is moving towards autonomous driving. In this ongoing
transition, sophisticated challenges are arising. One of many is the development
of remote maneuvering stations from which a vehicle can remotely be maneuvered
by an operator. In this master thesis the aim has been to investigate which information
a remote operator needs and how to present it; in order to maneuver the
vehicle as safe and efficient as possible. The challenge was at first to fundamentally
understand how we perceive important attributes such as speed, road gradient and
surrounding environment when driving a traditional vehicle. And secondly, how this
information could be translated into a stationed remote maneuvering station where
the visual information is given through 2D screens which displays a live video feed
from cameras mounted on the remote vehicle.
To achieve this, two iterations which followed a combination of the methodologies
from Design Thinking and IDEO were conducted, each containing thorough desk
research, expert interviews, ideations, prototyping and evaluating. The result is
packaged into guidelines which gives the reader an understanding of which information
the remote operator needs in order to perceive the vehicle and its environment,
and how to present it in an intuitive way which does not causes fatigue.
