Abstract: Background: The shipping industry today is strenuous work. There are many requirements from different regulations that must be followed. This contributes to long working hours and stress. The stress is greatest for officers and they are also the ones responsible for the firefighting organization. When it comes to fire drills, it is important that these are well planned and that they are sufficiently complicated so that it is possible to identify areas in need of improvement. If problems are detected, they must be fixed. This responsibility also falls on the officers. Aim: • Is the execution of fire drills reconnected to how the fire organization should be structured? • To increase knowledge about firefighters on board ships, should fire drills be made more or less physically and/or mentally exhausting according to seafarers? Method: For this study, we created a questionnaire intended for seafarers. Results: 74 Swedish sailors responded to the questionnaire. The majority of them are students at Chalmers. The majority of the officers felt that fire drills were structured in such a way that it was possible to identify areas in need of improvement, with some spread to that it was not. The entire crew had a similar view, but with a larger group who thought the exercise was partly structured to identify problem areas. Generally crews wanted the fire drills to be more physically and psychologically complex. Almost no one wanted less physically challenging and psychologically complex fire drill.
