Abstract: The bachelor thesis was conducted at Chalmers University and is a collaboration between Stena Innovation Industry Laboraty, Volvo Penta AB and MVV Casat. During the Covid-19 pandemic, all work was conducted at distance. The objective of the thesis was to make an investment assessment on automation of a quality control to detect which method of automation is the most profitable. Also, compare costs with an existing manual quality inspection station. Interviews and conversations with stakeholders led to a current situations analysis in order to gain knowledge about the production used as a case study and previous work with techniques used to automate quality controls. Two types of vision systems were selected for the comparison: 3D-camera and 2D-camera. Experiment with a 2D-camera in combination with a collaborative application examined if detection of defects was possible while the 3D-camera was treated theoretically. The experiments showed that detection of defects is possible with a vision system. The results from the investment assessment showed that integration with a vision system could be profitable but that it depends on the total amount of produced products. In addition, the purpose of the quality control has to be considered when selecting an automated quality control.
