This project is a part of the process to realise the vision that Varbergs kommun have for the new
district called Västerport. 2500 apartments are going to be built, along with a hotel and shops in
the new district. This together with the waterfront location will create a lot of new meeting places
for the citizens and tourist. The purpose of this project is to develop a concept containing a line
of products for a walking path in Västerport, Varberg. These products should provide sitting for
grown ups and children and at the same time encourage interactions and playful activities. The
product are an important part in the creation of a playful atmosphere along the walk way, called
¨Barnens boulevard¨ (The children’s Boulevard). The visions for this project are well describe in
a number of documents compiled by Varbergs kommun. These documents will be a big part of
the feasibility study and will set the frame work for this project.
The setup for the process of this project is divided into four phases. Project phase, Product phase,
Concept development and Final concept. In the Project phase the content of the project will
be discussed, without involving the actual product. The Project phase discusses what is going to
be achieved with in the project in difference to Phase 2, the Product phase, that discusses how to
achieve the goal. Phase 3, Concept development is focusing on the development of ideas and
concepts based on the two initial phases. The project concludes in phase 4, Final Concept, where
the final decisions are made and the product will be visualised, to clearly communicate the result
of the project.
The result of this project is a modular concept that provides seating and possibilities for play. The
visualised concept is stylistically pure and colourful to fit in the new district. The moduls can be
connected both horizontally and vertically to create a dynamic and variated environment. The
base shape of a trapezoid the moduls ar inspired by the bastions on the fortress in Varberg. The
shape is based on an 60° angle triangle, that allows three sides being the same length and one
side with the dubble length. This relationship enables the moduls to connect to each other in various
ways, which makes it easy to variation an adoption when placing the modules. To enable a
bigger satisfaction rate among the target group, a smaller modul will be used. This modul can be
used as a step, armrest or make a lower sitting place.
The moduls provides a possibility to creating an variated environment where people van sit together
too associate in groups while some other what to sit more by them selfs. This is made possible
in the same environment where children gets the opportunity to play and test their limits by
jumping, climbing and explore heights. All of this together, makes this an active and lively urban
environment where people can meet and enjoy themselves, which is the primary target for this
project and for the whole of Västerport.
