This project constitutes a bachelor’s thesis conducted at Chalmers University of Technology in collaboration with Thule. The study focuses on the rear-mounted cargo box Arcos XL, a relatively new product within Thule’s portfolio. The aim of the project was to investigate how users interact with Arcos XL to identify opportunities for increased customer value, with a particular focus on enabling single-person mounting, usage, and dismounting. A user study was conducted using both quantitative and qualitative methods to capture user needs and experiences. The results identified several key challenges, among several; limited clearance between the vehicle and the cargo box, difficulties in verifying correct engagement between the box and the platform, and challenges in aligning the platform during installation. These issues were addressed through a conceptual redesign that includes features such as an extendable platform based on telescopic square hollow sections (SHS), a latch-based attachment system, and an integrated spirit level for improved alignment. The final concept demonstrates that single-person mounting can be made more feasible through a combination of coordinated design solutions that reduce physical effort and improve usability. The concept is developed at a conceptual level and does not represent a finalized product; however, the proposed solutions are based on realistic and technically feasible design considerations.
