Robust design with wood; a case study of a new office building in Nya Varvet, Gothenburg

Abstract

The usage of wood in buildings is a very old practice but it is still developing. This master´s thesis investigates the usage of wood as both construction material and design material to achieve a robust design. Five main subject are investigated in the context of robustness: Construction, fire resistance, indoor climate, noise reduction and maintenance. The investigation is made through a case study in the context of a new office building for the client Northern Offshore Services. NOS is a company in need of a new office building and a warehouse and aims for robustness being the identity of the project. The case study is located on a site next to the water in “Nya Varvet” in Gothenburg. This master´s thesis arrives in a proposal of a new office building and a new warehouse using wood both as construction material and design material. The wood is used both exteriorly and interiorly. Solving challenges both in the design of a good office environment but also focusing on creating a robust building.
