Automation is a major part of the future of manufacturing, enabling factories to efficiently produce and deliver products and services. As the industry strives for higher efficiency and reduced production costs, automation has increased in demand. In sorting processes, automation can help reduce the reliance on manual labor, which in turn can lead to increased precision in the manufacturing process as well as improvements in the working environment for employees. This project investigates the possibility of automating the sorting of boxes using two robotic arms placed between two conveyor belts. The goal was to develop a compact system capable of identifying the color of boxes and sorting them based on predetermined criteria. The system was constructed using sensors, servos, conveyor belts, and custom-built robotic arms. Several tests were conducted to evaluate the systems precision and performance, including tests that pushed the system to its limits. The results of the tests showed that the system met the predetermined requirements. At higher conveyor belt speeds, more errors occurred with the robotic arms, indicating that higher speeds negatively affect reliability. In addition to conveyor speed, the systems ability to maintain consistent precision is also affected by the quality of the sensors and servos used. In conclusion, it is possible to create a system with robotic arms and conveyor belts to sort boxes based on color. However, improvements and higher quality components are needed to increase the systems precision and stability. Such a system can be scaled up and has potential applications in logistics and packaging industries. The system can also be used for educational purposes to demonstrate principles in fields such as mechatronics and automation.
