- PostSpeech enhancement for non-stationary noise around a machine cabinZhou, Yiliang; Chalmers tekniska högskola / Institutionen för arkitektur och samhällsbyggnadsteknik (ACE); Chalmers tekniska högskola / Institutionen för arkitektur och samhällsbyggnadsteknik (ACE); Ahrens, Jens; Frenne, NicklasThis thesis is mainly concerned with the solution for speech enhancement in the presence of non-stationary noise around the machine cabin. This allows outside speech to enter the cabin and reduces unwanted noise. The application scenario of this work is a signal processing system using a microphone array outside the cabin to capture signals and using different algorithms to enhance the speech signals. With the help of this system, the machine operator is able to get speech information in a noisy environment. The noise sources in this situation are more complex and non-stationary. Examples of noise sources include engine noise, traffic noise, or other construction activities. Previous work done by Tomoya chose the microphone array configuration and developed the beamforming method. From the results of the valuable work, it is found that beamforming is able to increase the signal-to-noiseratio (SNR) in the current situation, but the sound quality and SNR are still limited due to the low input SNR and non-stationary noise environment. Therefore, modified beamforming and new methods are implemented in this work. noise cancellation(NC) predicts the transfer path for the noise signal and removes it by controlling the minimum error of the output. Noise suppression(NS) uses the scheme of spectral subtraction to subtract the noise spectrum from noisy speech spectrum. A combination of beamforming and noise cancellation and a combination of beamforming and noise suppression method are developed and evaluated. The result shows a better performance for this low input SNR and non-stationary noise case.

This work is based on earlier research that investigate the capture efficiency for single cylinder and the aim of this work is to consider how the capture efficiency will change with an infinite row of cylinders perpendicular the flow direction. The first step was to analyze the flow distribution in the fluid domain and then to consider the particle capture through this cylinders. So a fixed number of particles that were released upwards the stream flow and then considered how many particles were captured bye this cylinder. The conclusions made from this Master thesis is that the effect of a more dense vegetation will give a higher capture efficiency and that a higher flow velocity (to some extent) also will give a higher capture efficiency.
- PostSubjective response to audio-visual environments - Combinations of low frequency noise, natural sounds and urban environments(2005) Johansson, David; Chalmers tekniska högskola / Institutionen för bygg- och miljöteknik, Teknisk akustik; Chalmers University of Technology / Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Applied AcousticsIn today's urban environment, ventilation and low frequency noise from ventilation systems inside urban patios have become just about unavoidable. This study investigates if the perception of low frequency ventilation noise can be made more positive. To do this, a binaural recording of ventilation noise was done and pictures of two simular urban patios but with different degree of vegetation were taken. Recordings of birdsong and whispering leaves were also gathered. Ventilation noise alone or with addition of birdsong or whispering leaves was used as acoustic stimuli. A group of 30 Swedish test persons were exposed to six audio-visual environments created by combinations of the two pictures and the three sounds. After the exposures the participants filled ot questionnaires that were designed to give subjective ratings of the environments. The response to the audio-visual environments and interrelationships between audio and visual stimuli were analyzed. The results showed that the perception of an environment containing a low frequency noise could be improved with either visual stimuli or natural sounds. By adding natural sounds the environment was experienced as significantly more positive than without natural sounds. The environment was also perceived as significantly more positive when vegetation was present in the visual stimuli.
